History

In short

The Teijsen family has worked in natural casings since 1928, when Karel Johan Teijsen started his own casing production company in Amsterdam, the year the city hosted the Olympic Games.

His son Gijsbert, known as Bep, joined in 1952 and took over the business at the Amsterdam slaughterhouse. In 1968 he formed a joint venture with the Van den Hengel family.

In 1985 the third generation, Karel, Jeroen, René and Simone Teijsen, took over the shares and built the company into an international market leader in hog casings and meat by-products.

After 47 years the family left that company in 2014 and founded Teijsen B.V. in 2016, with a new building in Zeewolde and an own selection facility in Hunan, China. A new plant followed in Shaoshan in 2020. In 2023 the fourth generation, Ruben Teijsen and Nick Fiere, became co-shareholders.

In 2025 the board changed; in 2026 IFS Food Higher Level was renewed at 96.18 %.

  3. 1968

Joint venture with Van den Hengel

Bep Teijsen joins forces with another family company at the Amsterdam slaughterhouse, the Van den Hengel family. The combined business trades as Combinatie Teijsen van den Hengel.

  4. 1985

    The third generation takes over

Mr Teijsen and the Van den Hengel brothers transfer their shares to Karel, Jeroen, René and Simone Teijsen. The company moves to a new facility and grows into an international market leader in natural hog casings and meat by-products.

  5. 2014

    Leaving the company

After 47 years the family leaves the company to look for other opportunities. The casing business, however, never leaves the family.

  6. 2016

A new family company: Teijsen B.V.

Two years on, the family founds Teijsen B.V. and restarts its activities in natural casings, this time from Zeewolde, the Netherlands.

  7. 2016

    Foundation stone, 1 April 2016

In the presence of former partner Manus van den Hengel, Bep and Loes Teijsen lay the foundation stone of the new building at Ambachtsweg 34, Zeewolde. Later that year the construction is finished and Teijsen B.V. starts operating from the new facility.

Nearly a century in one product

Few companies stay with one product for almost a hundred years. The Teijsen family has stayed with natural casings since 1928, through the Amsterdam slaughterhouse years, a joint venture, a move to a new facility and the growth into an international market leader under the third generation. In 2014 the family left that company after 47 years. In 2016 it started again, with its own name on the building in Zeewolde.

A new start with an old principle

The second start was built around a principle the family had learned the hard way: quality over quantity. Rather than buy selected casings from others, Teijsen opened its own selection facility in Hunan in 2016 and built a new plant in Shaoshan in 2020. The result is a company that controls calibre, length and salt content before a single bundle ships, and ships more than 200 full container loads a month to more than 50 countries. How that works today is described on the production page and the quality page.

The next generation

Since 2023 the fourth generation shares the ownership. Ruben Teijsen runs supply chain, Nick Fiere leads sales. René Teijsen handed over the CEO role in May 2025 and remains Senior Advisor. The people behind these names are on the team page.
